South Asian Destination Weddings: How to Choose a Resort for a Multi-Day Program

A South Asian wedding is a program, not a single ceremony, so the right resort is the one that can host every event with the right space, sound, and food. This guide walks through what each event needs, how the major resort brands compare, and how to choose between Riviera Maya and Cancun and Punta Cana. For a brand-by-brand list, see our South Asian destination wedding resorts page.

What Makes a South Asian Wedding Different for a Resort

A standard resort wedding is one ceremony and one reception. A South Asian wedding often spans several days, a larger and more multi-generational guest list, long events, live music, and food that has to meet specific dietary needs. Four things decide whether a resort fits.

Space

Several venues, not one

Each event has a different footprint. Look for a resort that can hold the Baraat, the ceremony, and the reception in separate spaces, and that can reserve them for the right dates.

Sound

Late and loud is normal

A Sangeet is a party. Ask about the sound limit and end time for each venue, not just the resort overall.

Food

Menus that fit your family

Ask about vegetarian, Jain, and halal needs, and whether the resort has an Indian cuisine specialist.

People

A coordinator who knows the program

Ask whether your coordinator has South Asian wedding training and has run these events before.

Event by Event: What Each One Needs from a Resort

Programs differ by family and tradition, so treat this as a checklist of questions rather than a fixed schedule.

EventWhat to ask the resort
Welcome partyCan it be held outdoors or in a private restaurant, and what is the guest limit?
MehndiIs there a shaded, seated space with room for artists and tables? Any limits on staining or henna?
HaldiIs there a space where turmeric and flowers are allowed, and how is cleanup handled?
SangeetWhat are the venue's end time and sound limit? Is a DJ, dhol, or live performance permitted?
BaraatWhat route is available, how wide is it, and can a horse, dhol, and dancers use it?
Wedding ceremonyCan the venue hold a mandap and your guest count for a ceremony that may last two hours or more?
ReceptionIs there a ballroom or beach venue for dinner and dancing, and how does the menu work for your family?

Ten Questions to Ask Before You Book

  1. Is your coordinator trained in South Asian weddings, and have they run a multi-day program?
  2. Which events does the package include, and what costs extra?
  3. Which venues fit my guest count for each event?
  4. What are the sound limits and end times for each venue?
  5. What route is available for the Baraat?
  6. Can I bring my own priest, decorator, caterer, or DJ, and what are the fees?
  7. What vegetarian, Jain, and halal options can the kitchen prepare?
  8. What is the rain plan for each outdoor event?
  9. How many rooms must we book to qualify for a package? See what "free" really means.
  10. Which dates work best? See the best time to marry and the planning timeline.
Tip: book your venues for every event, not just the ceremony. A multi-day program needs several spaces held on the right dates, so start early and plan your save-the-dates and guest count with the program in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best resort for a South Asian destination wedding?
It depends on your program and your guests. Dreams publishes named South Asian packages at seven properties in Mexico and Punta Cana, Paradisus La Esmeralda offers a 3 AM entertainment permit and an over-water Baraat bridge, and Breathless is built around DJ-led nightlife and large buyout venues. A specialist can compare them against your event list, guest count, and dates.
How many days does a South Asian destination wedding take?
Most multi-day programs run two to four days. Dreams' Dulha & Dulhan package covers five events, and its Shaadi package covers six events over three days. You can add or remove events with the resort's wedding team.
Can a resort host a Baraat?
Many can, but it depends on the route. A Baraat needs open space for the procession, room for a dhol and dancers, and a clear path to the ceremony site. Ask each resort which route they use, whether it is open to other guests, and what the sound limits are.
Can we hold a Sangeet that runs late?
Sound and curfew rules vary by resort and by venue. Paradisus La Esmeralda's Cypress Ballroom has a 3 AM entertainment permit, which we believe is unique among all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. At other resorts, confirm the end time for each venue in writing before you book.
Is a Hindu ceremony at an all-inclusive resort legal?
Most couples hold the religious ceremony at the resort as a symbolic ceremony and complete the legal marriage at home. If you want a legal marriage abroad, Mexico and the Dominican Republic have document requirements that vary. Our legal guide covers the details, and a specialist can confirm the current rules.
Can we bring our own priest, decorator, caterer, or DJ?
Policies differ by resort and many include a coordinator, a mandap setup, and Indian cuisine in the package. If you want an outside vendor, ask about approved-vendor rules, fees, and access times before you sign, and get the answer in writing.
What should I ask a resort before booking a South Asian wedding?
Ask whether the coordinator has South Asian wedding training, which events the package includes, which venues fit your guest count, what the sound limits are, how the Baraat route works, whether vegetarian and Jain options are available, and what happens to the program if it rains.
