The 6 Factors That Determine the Right Brand
Every brand has a beautiful portfolio and a great wedding coordinator. The question is never "is this brand good?" — they all are. The question is whether the brand fits your specific situation. These are the six factors that separate the right brand from the wrong one.
1. Guest Count
The single biggest filter. Brands like Le Blanc and Sandals cap around 50–80 guests comfortably. Palace Resorts (Moon Palace) handles 25,000. Most brands fall between 50–500. Choosing the wrong brand for your headcount is the most common expensive mistake.
2. Adults-Only vs Family
Are children attending? If yes, adults-only brands (Secrets · Le Blanc · Paradisus La Perla) eliminate those guests from the property. The right answer is almost always mixed-group strategy (adults-only wing + family wing at the same complex) or a family-friendly brand with an adults-only zone.
3. Package Budget
Package price (what the ceremony and reception cost) vs room block cost (what guests pay per night) are separate. RIU has the lowest per-room rates. Dreams and Secrets are mid-tier. Palace and Hard Rock premium. Le Blanc ultra-luxury. The free wedding threshold at each brand varies dramatically.
4. Destination
Mexico (no government surcharge · legal same-sex marriage available · most U.S. direct flights) vs Dominican Republic ($800 DR surcharge for legal ceremonies only · symbolic avoids it) vs Jamaica (no surcharge · British legal system · strong Sandals footprint). Not all brands operate in all countries.
5. South Asian / Multi-Day
Most brands can host a Pheras. Very few can host a proper Sangeet — the Quintana Roo 11 PM outdoor curfew kills the Sangeet at 99% of Riviera Maya resorts. Only Paradisus La Esmeralda (Cypress Ballroom 3 AM) and a small number of Palace properties avoid this. Dreams has a dedicated Dulha & Dulhan SA package. Brand matters enormously for SA weddings.
6. Yacht / Signature Ceremony
Only three Paradisus properties offer a named yacht ceremony (All Aboard · $13K–$32K). Hard Rock has Hacienda and Heaven signature package tiers. Palace Resorts have signature chapel and cenote options. Sandals has over-water chapels. If a specific ceremony type is the priority, that often decides the brand before any other factor.

Secrets is the primary answer — the most refined adults-only product in the mass all-inclusive market. For adults-only + yacht ceremony: Paradisus La Perla or Los Cabos. For couples-only (no guests at all): Sandals. Secrets is the default for most groups of 20–100 adults.

South Asian wedding — Sangeet past 11 PM is required
Paradisus La Esmeralda — Cypress Ballroom entertainment until 3 AM, the only all-inclusive venue in the Riviera Maya with this curfew. No other brand in this guide can host a proper traditional Sangeet in the Riviera Maya. For large-scale Pheras (200–1,000 guests) in the DR: Paradisus Palma Real (Malva Beach). Barceló is the automatic first check — 20% off all packages Mon–Thu is the only built-in weekday discount in the all-inclusive market. For a 200-guest wedding, 20% off can represent $5,000–$15,000 in savings depending on package tier. No other brand in this comparison offers a structural weekday discount.
Per-room guest budget is the primary constraint · need lowest nightly rate
RIU Hotels — consistently the lowest per-room nightly rate of any brand in this comparison. The Free Wedding Collection also has the most accessible room-block threshold. For a 100-guest group, the difference between RIU and Secrets in room rates alone can be $15,000–$40,000 over a 5-night block. When budget is the constraint, start with RIU and upgrade from there.
Catholic chapel ceremony on-site is required
Barceló Bávaro Palace (Oratorio Virgen de San Salvador — the only full Catholic chapel in a DR all-inclusive resort) or Moon Palace (chapel available). If a Catholic ceremony is the specific requirement — not just a chapel-style setting — Barceló Bávaro is the clearest answer in the DR. Mexico civil or symbolic options are available at most brands but are not sacramental.
Same-sex legal marriage is required (not symbolic)
Mexico brands for legal same-sex marriage: Secrets · Dreams · Hyatt Ziva/Zilara · Palace Resorts · Hard Rock · Paradisus (Mexico properties) — Quintana Roo has recognized same-sex marriage since 2012, Jalisco and Baja California Sur as well. Avoid DR and Jamaica if legal recognition is required — neither country legally recognizes same-sex marriage. Symbolic ceremonies are available everywhere and are legally identical in experience.

The one rule: Secrets is adults-only (18+). Dreams is family-friendly (all ages). Every other difference — atmosphere, pool energy, who walks down the aisle, whether grandchildren attend — flows from this single fact.

What "free" actually means in practice: The ceremony package is complimentary — meaning the venue setup, minister, cake, toast, and basic coordination are covered. The room block guests book at standard all-inclusive rates pays for those items indirectly. The "free" package is not nothing — at most brands it includes $2,000–$5,000 in real services.
