Hard Rock Mexico vs. Dominican Republic — Which Country Fits Your Wedding?

Hard Rock is the only brand in our portfolio spanning both countries — three properties on Mexico's Pacific and Caribbean coasts, plus the entertainment-packed Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic. The décor and packages are identical everywhere. What actually differs is the law, the cost, and the atmosphere.

Two Countries, One Brand — What Actually Changes

All five Hard Rock properties run the identical five-tier "Inspirations" wedding package system described in our full Packages Guide. Whichever country you choose, the décor, the ceremony structure, and the 32-guest cap are the same. What changes between Mexico and the Dominican Republic isn't the wedding itself — it's the legal framework around it, the government cost, and the day-to-day resort atmosphere.

Legal Requirements — Side by Side

Symbolic vs. legal is the real decision. Most couples at any Hard Rock property — in either country — choose a symbolic ceremony and handle the legal paperwork separately at home, since the ceremony experience is visually and emotionally identical either way. If a legal ceremony abroad matters to you specifically, that's the point where Mexico and the DR genuinely diverge: no surcharge and full same-sex legal recognition in Mexico, versus the $800 fee and no legal same-sex option in the DR.

Resort Atmosphere & Amenities

The single biggest atmosphere difference in the entire Hard Rock portfolio is Punta Cana's amenity depth versus the three Mexico properties' more curated, destination-specific experiences.

Which Country Fits Your Wedding?

Choose Mexico if...

You want a legal ceremony without the $800 government fee, you're a same-sex couple wanting a legally recognized marriage, you want a religious chapel option (Catholic in Riviera Maya, or Catholic/Hindu/Sikh/interfaith in Los Cabos), or you want the largest possible ceremony beach (Los Cabos, 1,400 guests).

Choose the Dominican Republic if...

Your wedding week is really a multi-day guest vacation and you want maximum on-property entertainment — casino, water park, golf, and the widest restaurant lineup in the brand — so guests never need to leave the resort during a 5–7 night stay.

Choosing between Mexico properties?

Riviera Maya has the most venues (26) and a two-section family/adults-only split. Cancun has the shortest transfer and a Hotel Zone location. Los Cabos has the only oceanfront chapel and the largest ceremony beach. See the full Hard Rock Wedding Packages Guide for the brand-wide comparison, or each property's own page for full venue detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the wedding package different between Mexico and the Dominican Republic?

No — the same five Inspirations packages, from Complimentary through Lavish Daydream, are offered at all five Hard Rock properties regardless of country. Pricing, décor themes, and inclusions are standardized.

Why does the Dominican Republic charge $800 for legal ceremonies?

The $800 fee is a mandatory Dominican government surcharge for legal civil ceremonies — it's not a resort fee or a VFL fee, and it applies regardless of which DR resort or wedding package is chosen. Most couples avoid it by choosing a symbolic ceremony, which looks and feels identical to a legal one.

Can same-sex couples get legally married at Hard Rock Punta Cana?

Not legally under Dominican law. Symbolic same-sex ceremonies are fully supported at Hard Rock Punta Cana with the same packages and venues as any other couple. For a legally recognized marriage, Mexico properties (Riviera Maya, Cancun, Los Cabos) offer full same-sex legal marriage with no additional surcharge.

Which country is better for a religious ceremony?

Mexico. Hard Rock Riviera Maya has the San Charbel Chapel (Catholic, 100 guests) and Hard Rock Los Cabos has an oceanfront chapel supporting Catholic, Hindu, Sikh, and interfaith ceremonies (112 guests). Hard Rock Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic does not have a dedicated chapel.

Which property is best for a guest-heavy, multi-day wedding week?

Hard Rock Punta Cana, for sheer on-property variety — a casino, water park, golf course, and 14 restaurants mean guests staying 5–7 nights have new things to do every day without leaving the resort. Riviera Maya is the strongest Mexico alternative for variety, with 10 restaurants and the two-section Hacienda/Heaven structure.
